Resonant Glass -

Making Sounds with Glass Objects

Most of us have heard about, or even tried, making a wine glass sing by rubbing our finger around the rim, but did you know there are infinite other ways to make sounds and music with a set of glasses.

The Resonant Glass is an interactive workshop that invites us to experiment and discover ways of creating sounds with glass. Participants explore why glasses can be used to make incredible sounds and how we can use glass and water to explore natural tuning systems. Together we’ll create our own scale and tuning with a large set of glass and water. Through cued improvisation, we create our own version of “Water Music”.

This workshop is very versatile. Participants can be musicians or non-musicians. It can be conducted in both a child and adult setting.

Past workshops have taken place at:

  • Chabot Space and Science Center

  • UC Berkeley

  • The Exploratorium

  • North Oakland Community Charter School

  • Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

  • Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive

Edward Schocker visited Cal to lead the “Glass Music Workshop”. He brought 30 glasses, three water jugs, 10 towels, sticks, and turkey basters all in ONE compact box. He works from kindergartners to adults. Thank you, Edward!
